Chemical peelings
- Principle of action: Chemical peelings abrade (take off) the top layers of the skin and thus smooth the appearance of the skin.
- Used materials:
- AHA (Alpha-hydroxy-acids) (superficial peels)
- Salicylic acid peels (superficial and mid-depth peels)
- Trichlor-acetic acid peels (mid-depth to deep peels)
Indikations: Acne, superficial lines, superficial scars, acne scars, pigment changes, skin impurities, tired-looking skin (leads to enhanced radiance of the skin).
- Preparation: for at least 2 weeks an AHA-cream needs to be applied to condition the skin. The skin 'lerns' to regenerate faster and thus the effects of the peel are much improved while side-effects are reduced.
- What to expect: The skin appears red immediately after the treatment and may feel very dry, tense and at times may peel off.
- Complications and unwanted side-effects: redness, tension and peeling of the skin, crust formation, superficial wounds (erosions), exacerbation of acne, pigment changes, especially upon UV-exposure (sunbed or natural light).
- Multiple treatments are typically necessary to achieve the desired effects, at intervalls of 2-4 weeks, depending on the substancel used.
